Brown Lentils – Whole Masoor Daal

Ingredients
Cooking the Lentils
- 1 cup brown lentils – whole masoor daal rinsed
- 4 cup water
- 2-3 cloves garlic can use garlic paste instead
- 1 tsp ginger (minced) can use ginger paste instead
- 1/4 of a medium sized onion
- 1 tsp salt or to taste
- 3/4 tsp coriander powder
- 3/4 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 tsp cumin powder
- 1/2 tsp tumeric powder
- 1 tbsp tamarind paste
Oil Seasoning / Bahgar
- 1/4 cup oil
- 5-6 garlic cloves (sliced)
- 2-3 dry red chilis
- 1/2 tsp cumin
Instructions
Making Lentils in Instant Pot
- Add all the ingredients from the list above (under lentils) in your instant pot.
- Pressure cook for 12 minutes. Then quick release.
- Adjust the consistency as per your preference. (Add more water or cook down the base for thickness)
- With a pototo masher, mash the lentils for a smoother base.
- Mix in 1 tbsp of tamarind paste. Simmer for 5 minutes.
Oil Seasoning / Bahgar
- In a frying pan, add oil and let it heat up.
- Add the ingrediants from the list above (under oil seasoning). Fry until garlic is golden brown. Do not burn.
- Add this oil seasoning to the lentils and mix.
- Serve daal over plain basmatic rice or flat bread.
